UAE-Linked Companies Hit with U.S. Sanctions Over Alleged Role in Sudan Conflict
Washington DC: The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced a “blocked pending investigation action” (BPI) against seven UAE-based companies for potential involvement in activities violating U.S. sanctions on Sudan. This action blocks all property and interests in property of these companies within the United States or controlled by U.S. persons pending further investigation.
“The Treasury Department is committed to enforcing sanctions against those who seek to undermine U.S. foreign policy objectives,” said a Treasury spokesperson. “We will continue to investigate and take action against any individuals or entities that violate our sanctions on Sudan.”
The UAE has also been implicated in supplying unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to Ethiopia, which have been used in a war against the Amhara people. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation recently featured an interview with General Yilma Merdassa and Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, who were seen near a model of the Wing Loong drone during the Ethiopian Air Force’s 88th anniversary. General Merdassa acknowledged that Ethiopia had received the UAS from China. The report also mentions that Turkish drones are among the UAE’s purchases, further linking the UAE to the ongoing conflict.
