Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) Intensifies Targeted Killings of Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa – A violent attack occurred midweek in Aseko district, Arsi Zone, Oromia region, resulting in the deaths of six civilians, including a local priest. The attack, which took place on August 13, 2024, in Tijo Village, left three others injured and caused significant property damage, including the destruction of homes and the looting of livestock.

Local sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, identified the attackers as members of the armed group known as “Shane,” also referred to as the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Among the deceased were Priest Belayneh Mamo of Telaltu St. Gabriel Church and five other residents of the village.

The attack has led to the displacement of around 400 households, with many seeking refuge at St. Michael Church. The conditions there are reportedly dire, with children and elderly individuals suffering from a lack of food and medicine.

Residents of Tijo Village expressed growing concern about the ongoing security issues in the area, noting that half of the village is under the control of Shane militants while government forces occupy the other half. Despite the presence of regional police, the security situation remains precarious.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence in the Arsi Zone. In November 2023, an attack in the Shirka district left 36 people dead, with the victims primarily being Orthodox Christians. The Oromia Communication Bureau blamed the OLA for the attack, but the group denied the allegations, accusing the government of scapegoating them after committing atrocities in the area.
