Kenya: Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced that President William Ruto has received an invitation to attend a summit aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This announcement followed Mudavadi’s meeting with a delegation led by Ambassador Henriette Geiger, Head of the European Union Delegation in Nairobi.
Scheduled to take place from June 15-16, 2024, in Switzerland, the summit titled “Summit on Peace in Ukraine” holds significant importance, according to Mudavadi. He emphasized Kenya’s dedication to promoting peaceful resolutions and stated that the invitation to President Ruto would be given careful consideration.
The summit aims to facilitate high-level discussions on global concerns such as nuclear security, food security, freedom of navigation, and humanitarian issues. It seeks to establish a mutual understanding at the highest political level for a comprehensive and just peace in Ukraine, aligned with the principles of the UN Charter.
Additionally, the meeting will kickstart a peace process by addressing, for the first time at a high political level, a roadmap for engaging both parties involved in the conflict.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in February 2014, stemmed from Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity. Russia’s occupation and annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, along with its support for pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas War, fueled the conflict. Over the years, the conflict has included naval clashes, cyber warfare, and heightened political tensions.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the conflict has taken a devastating toll on civilian life, resulting in thousands of deaths, injuries, and widespread destruction of property and infrastructure.
