Abdallah Hamdok, leader of the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces (Taqaddum), a Sudanese coalition dedicated to promoting democracy and human rights, has called on neighboring countries to increase their support for Sudanese refugees.
Speaking at the Coordination’s founding conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Monday, the former Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by African and Arab countries. He urged these nations to simplify procedures and provide all available aid to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese refugees.
Hamdok underscored the devastating impact of the war in Sudan, which has drained the country’s resources and led to numerous human rights violations. He also warned of an impending famine that could cause more deaths than the ongoing violence.
The former Prime Minister appealed to the regional and international community to pressure the warring factions, ensure the unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid, and avoid using food and medicine as weapons against innocent civilians. He emphasized the urgent need for immediate action to end the conflict through negotiations between the opposing parties.
Additionally, Egypt plans to convene its own conference, which army supporters are expected to attend at the end of next month. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government based in Port Sudan announced it will not accept the participation of countries it described as ‘sponsoring’ the RSF. It also stated it will only accept the presence of IGAD and the AU if they reinstate Sudan’s membership in those organizations.
