U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Sudanese Rapid Support Forces Commanders
Washington DC: May 15, 2024 The United States has imposed sanctions on two commanders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Ali Yagoub Gibril and Osman Mohamed Hamid Mohamed, for their leadership roles in RSF operations in Darfur. The RSF’s military activities, particularly the encirclement and siege of El Fasher in North Darfur, have endangered the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
The U.S. government has condemned the attacks by the RSF, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and allied forces, which have resulted in numerous civilian casualties. The U.S. calls for an immediate cessation of these attacks and urges the removal of all impediments to humanitarian access. Millions of people in the region are at risk of starvation due to the ongoing conflict.
In a statement, the U.S. emphasized that the Sudanese people deserve peace and a return to civilian government. The United States will continue to leverage its resources to support the peace process and impose consequences on those who perpetuate the conflict. The U.S. also expressed readiness to take additional measures against individuals and institutions that escalate the war, commit atrocities, or obstruct humanitarian efforts, in violation of international humanitarian law and commitments made in the Jeddah Declaration.
